Singapore's Wealth Management Expands

Singapore's assets under management (AUM) reached S$6.7 trillion in 2025, according to the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). This figure marked a 10.1 per cent increase from the previous year. While this expansion reflects strong performance and attracts global capital, the MAS suggests the financial sector's true success extends beyond merely managing more funds. The growth highlights a need to ensure Singapore's financial capabilities benefit a broader segment of its population.

Bridging the Advice Divide

The current framework often limits access to expert financial judgment. Under the Securities and Futures Act, an individual typically qualifies as an an accredited investor with an income of at least S$300,000, net financial assets over S$1 million, or net personal assets above S$2 million (excluding a primary residence beyond a cap).

While this protects against risky products, it creates a gap. Ordinary households, facing equally complex decisions like mortgage repayment versus investment, insurance needs, and retirement savings management, often receive only product pitches or app prompts, rather than tailored advice.

MAS Advocates Accessible Planning

To address this disparity, MAS encourages banks and financial technology (fintech) firms to adapt their sophisticated tools for affluent clients into affordable, fixed-fee planning options for everyday families. This initiative calls for transparent costs and no obligation to purchase specific products.

Existing government programmes, such as MoneySense and the Plan with CPF platform, provide a foundation. However, the critical missing element remains accessible human guidance during significant life transitions, including marriage, home purchases, caregiving, retirement, and bereavement.

Measuring Financial Security

The industry's success should shift beyond traditional metrics like total assets under management or the number of family offices. Instead, the focus will move to tangible household outcomes, such as citizens holding adequate emergency savings, understanding fees, having clear retirement-income plans, and accessing trusted advice before crises.

The Monetary Authority of Singapore expects financial institutions, including banks and fintechs, to actively develop and implement affordable, fixed-fee planning services. Initial reporting on these new household outcome metrics is anticipated by Q3 2027.
