India's PFRDA enables NPS accounts on PhonePe, BHIM
India's Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) introduced a three-step digital registration for the National Pension System (NPS) on payment apps, requiring a minimum initial contribution of ₹ 250.

Digital Onboarding for Retirement Savings
India's Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) announced on 6 October the availability of its National Pension System (NPS) Tatkal facility on PhonePe and BHIM. This initiative allows eligible users to open an NPS account through a simplified three-step digital process.
The PFRDA's objective is to streamline access to retirement savings, capitalising on the widespread use of digital payment platforms in India. This move is designed to reduce the effort typically involved in registering for the scheme.
Simplified Account Opening Process
The digital registration process requires users to access the NPS Tatkal facility within the supported payment applications. Applicants must enter their details, select an eligible bank account, and then complete an initial contribution of ₹ 250 via the Unified Payments Interface (UPI).
Following successful verification of details and payment, the subscriber receives a Permanent Retirement Account Number (PRAN), which serves as the unique identifier for their NPS account. Users should confirm their bank's eligibility before starting.
Investment Structure and User Considerations
NPS investments are linked to market performance, with returns contingent on the chosen pension fund and investment options. The scheme is structured for long-term retirement savings. The PFRDA advises users to assess their investment horizon and risk appetite before contributing.
NPS offers two primary account types: Tier I, the main retirement account with conditional withdrawals, and Tier II, an optional investment account for Tier I subscribers, offering greater withdrawal flexibility.
Digital Access and Pension Growth
The PFRDA's integration of NPS account opening with popular digital payment platforms aims to significantly expand the National Pension System's subscriber base. This is particularly relevant for first-time investors seeking accessible retirement planning tools.
The PFRDA's next official update on NPS enrolment figures, typically released in January 2027, will provide initial insights into the impact of this digital push on pension adoption across India.
