DBS Targets Youth with New Card Offerings

DBS introduced two new payment cards, the Chromo credit card and TravelLah! debit card, targeting younger Singaporean customers. The Chromo card launched on 5 September. TravelLah! will be available from 13 September. These products address both everyday rewards and international spending needs.

DBS aims to capture market share among the 16-29 age group with these tailored offerings. Chan Sow Han, Head of Payments and Unsecured Lending at DBS Singapore, noted Chromo's model automatically awards bonus cashback based on spending patterns, turning the traditional rewards system around.

Chromo's Flexible Rewards and No FX Fees

The Chromo credit card is available for customers aged 21 to 29. It offers up to 5% cashback on their two highest eligible local spending categories monthly. Other eligible local spending earns 1% cashback. Categories include dining, shopping, travel, transport, entertainment, and wellness.

Cardholders can switch between cashback and miles once a month without losing earned rewards. The card also waives foreign exchange fees on overseas spending and its annual fee for five years. It includes weekday deals and merchant offers in Malaysia, Japan, and South Korea.

TravelLah! Simplifies International Payments

The TravelLah! debit card targets customers aged 16 and above. It supports payments in over 150 currencies using Visa exchange rates, without additional bank mark-ups or foreign exchange fees from DBS. The bank will also waive its overseas ATM withdrawal fees, though operator charges may still apply. The card links to a separate Singapore dollar wallet within the DBS PayLah!

app. This allows users to manage travel funds and top up via PayLah! or a linked DBS or POSB account. Chan stated TravelLah! simplifies travel spending by removing the need for pre-conversion.

Market Impact and Competition

DBS's latest card launches demonstrate a clear strategy to deepen engagement with younger demographics in Singapore. By offering flexible rewards and cost-saving features for overseas transactions, DBS aims to secure customer loyalty early.

This move intensifies competition within the youth banking segment, potentially prompting other local and regional banks to review their own offerings. For fintechs, it highlights the ongoing challenge from incumbent banks adapting quickly to consumer preferences. This could drive further innovation in digital payments across Southeast Asia.
