Luxury Market Expansion

Thailand's luxury retail market currently stands at US$4.4 billion. Property consultancy CBRE forecasts this sector will grow by approximately 5% annually through 2028. This expansion reflects more than just the spending power of affluent consumers and international visitors.

The industry is gaining momentum as Thailand develops a broader influence within the global luxury landscape, moving beyond its traditional role as merely a destination for international brands.

Emerging as an Influencer

The country is increasingly becoming an influential force in shaping global fashion and luxury trends. Thai entertainment figures have garnered significant influence, earning spots on industry indices like The Business of Fashion's BoF 500. Global luxury houses now frequently engage Thai talent to connect with audiences across Asia and beyond.

This shift is underscored by the Financial Times hosting its Business of Luxury Summit – Asia Edition in Bangkok from 19–20 October, marking its debut in the city.

Experience-Driven Consumption

Luxury consumer spending is evolving beyond products to focus on experiences. Angela Mackay, Financial Times chief commercial officer and managing director for Asia Pacific, notes that Bangkok's strengths in hospitality, culture, and tourism are creating new luxury ecosystems. This trend allows Southeast Asia to offer more than just five-star accommodation or upscale shopping.

The region can now provide seamless, distinctive experiences, ranging from wellness retreats to unique dining and cultural engagements.

Why it matters

While Asian consumers show resilience, the luxury market is becoming polarised, with wealthier buyers better insulated from economic shifts. Brands must therefore balance their international identity with diverse local tastes across different Asian countries. Thailand's growing cultural influence presents an opportunity to redefine how luxury is perceived globally.

This suggests a future where Asia helps shape worldwide luxury trends, rather than simply absorbing global offerings, impacting brand strategy and investment focus in the region.
