Southeast Asia E-commerce Captures 25% Retail Share, Targets $400 Billion
Online retail in the region now accounts for a quarter of all consumer spending, with major platforms growing at 33% year-on-year in Q1 2026.

Regional Online Spending Surges
Online retail now constitutes 25 percent of all consumer spending across Southeast Asia. This sector is projected to double its value, surpassing $400 billion by 2031, according to the E-commerce Payments Momentum Report 2026.
The report, produced by financial technology start-up Xendit and e-commerce data firm Cube, surveyed 6,000 online shoppers in the region's six primary markets, including 1,000 from Indonesia. Growth in digital payments and the expansion of various e-commerce platforms drive this market shift.
Current Market Value and Leading Economies
Physical goods e-commerce sales in Southeast Asia are set to exceed $200 billion this year, marking a significant milestone. Simon Torring, co-founder of Cube, stated this during the report's launch. Indonesia maintains its position as the largest e-commerce market within the region.
The overall market's trajectory shows a clear path from billions to hundreds of billions in value, reflecting increasing consumer adoption of online purchasing channels.
Platforms Outpace Growth Forecasts
Major e-commerce platforms operating in the region, including Shopee, Lazada, and TikTok Shop, recorded faster growth than anticipated. These platforms collectively saw year-on-year growth exceeding 33 percent in the first quarter of 2026.
This figure, as detailed in the E-commerce Payments Momentum Report 2026, represents double the initial projections, which had forecast growth of up to 16 percent. This accelerated expansion points to robust consumer engagement and platform innovation.
Strategic Priorities for Businesses
The rapid expansion of Southeast Asia's e-commerce market compels businesses to prioritise strategic investments. Companies will need to enhance digital infrastructure, optimise supply chains for faster delivery, and innovate in digital payment solutions to capture market share.
Continued competition for customer acquisition and loyalty will also drive spending on marketing and personalisation. Regulators in key markets like Indonesia may also examine market concentration as the sector matures.
