SM Prime opens new maritime museum at MOA Complex
The 9,000-square-metre Museo del Galeón, featuring a full-scale 17th-century ship replica, aims to boost cultural tourism in the Philippines.

SM Prime Expands Tourism Portfolio
SM Prime Holdings Inc. has expanded its tourism and cultural offerings at the SM Mall of Asia (MOA) Complex in Pasay, Philippines. The company recently opened Museo del Galeón, an experiential maritime museum. This new, four-level facility spans 9,000 square metres and is designed to immerse visitors in the country's rich maritime heritage.
It specifically highlights the historical significance of the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade through interactive exhibits and live programmes.
Experiential Exhibits and Early Success
A central feature of Museo del Galeón is a full-scale replica of the 17th-century Galeón Espíritu Santo, meticulously crafted from fibreglass by local artisans. Since its inauguration last May, the museum has attracted thousands of visitors, according to SM Prime.
It has also hosted a variety of private tours, educational workshops, expert talks, and special after-hours events, demonstrating its appeal to a broad audience.
Corporate Partnerships and Future Plans
SM Prime reported significant corporate backing for the museum's efforts to promote Philippine maritime history. Companies and individuals can sponsor one of 181 permanent floating galleon installations, with their name on the vessel, supporting the museum's mission.
Operations director Chiqui Batac highlighted the private sector's role in heritage preservation and client engagement through cultural experiences. SM Prime plans further after-hours programmes, expert-led talks, youth workshops, and brand collaborations to evolve the visitor experience and encourage repeat visits.
The launch of Museo del Galeón diversifies SM Prime's offerings within the MOA Complex, potentially increasing footfall and dwell time for the entire retail and entertainment hub.
For investors in Philippine real estate and tourism, this development underscores the value of integrating cultural attractions into large commercial developments to enhance visitor engagement and drive economic activity.
The emphasis on corporate sponsorship also creates new avenues for businesses to align with cultural preservation, offering unique branding and client interaction opportunities within a prominent leisure destination.
