RBI Extends Sadbhav Nagrik Sahakari Bank Curbs

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has prolonged its regulatory directives on Sadbhav Nagrik Sahakari Bank Maryadit, a cooperative lender based in Chhatarpur, Madhya Pradesh. The central bank announced the extension, citing public interest, which will keep the restrictions in effect for an additional three months.

These directives, initially set to expire on October 07, 2026, will now continue until the close of business on January 07, 2027. This decision follows previous extensions of the initial regulatory action.

Regulatory Mandate and Previous Extensions

The RBI first imposed these directions on Sadbhav Nagrik Sahakari Bank under Section 35A read with Section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949. The initial directive, issued on October 06, 2025, was for a six-month period, concluding on April 07, 2026. The central bank then extended these measures up to October 07, 2026, through a directive dated July 02, 2026. The current extension represents a further continuation of these existing regulatory oversight measures.

Central Bank's Position

The Reserve Bank of India stated its satisfaction that extending the directive is necessary for the public interest. Despite this extension, the central bank clarified that its action should not imply approval of the bank's financial health. The RBI explicitly noted that the extension or any modification does not mean it is content with the cooperative bank's financial position.

Other terms and conditions of the existing directive remain unchanged during this period. This reflects the RBI's cautious stance on the bank's situation.

Why it matters

This prolonged regulatory oversight for Sadbhav Nagrik Sahakari Bank indicates the Reserve Bank of India's ongoing scrutiny of cooperative lenders. It points to the central bank's commitment to maintaining stability within the financial system, particularly concerning smaller institutions.

The continued supervision suggests persistent underlying issues at the bank that require resolution. Sadbhav Nagrik Sahakari Bank faces a critical period to address these concerns before the January 2027 deadline.
