Indonesia Integrates Indigenous Land Data for Spatial Planning
Indonesia's government has combined data from its Ministry of Culture, the Ancestral Domain Registration Agency (BRWA), and AMAN to map 3,857 Indigenous communities. This initiative aims to strengthen policymaking and land recognition, potentially streamlining spatial planning.

Unified Data for Indigenous Communities
Indonesia's government has integrated data from three key sources to create a comprehensive dataset for Indigenous communities. The Ministry of Culture, the Ancestral Domain Registration Agency (BRWA), and AMAN, the nation's largest Indigenous peoples' alliance, contributed to this effort. This new dataset covers 3,857 Indigenous communities.
The government states this integration will strengthen policymaking and improve Indigenous peoples' protection. The new integrated dataset launched on August 19 in Jakarta.
Enhancing Spatial Planning Visibility
This consolidated database documents customary territories and cultural aspects. These include Indigenous languages, local foods, and traditional knowledge. BRWA suggests the spatial implications are significant. Customary territory maps could become part of the government’s official geospatial data, or thematic geospatial information (IGT).
This would increase Indigenous peoples' visibility in spatial planning and permitting processes, according to BRWA head Kasmita Widodo. Before this, data on Indigenous peoples was scattered across various agencies.
Addressing Data Discrepancies
Culture Minister Fadli Zon highlighted that fragmented data previously hindered effective policy interventions. He noted that even a single community difference in datasets could translate into thousands of hectares in customary territory discrepancies.
Didik Darmanto, director at the Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas), pointed out the lack of a common "primary key" across government datasets. This makes it difficult to verify if different records refer to the same entity. AMAN handed over 2,284 customary territory maps, covering 36.6 million hectares across 32 provinces, during the launch.
