Indian Equities Open Lower

Indian equity markets were set for a lower opening on 22 October 2026, following declines on the previous day. The GIFT Nifty index showed a negative start for domestic benchmarks, trading around 22,682, a drop of 46.50 points or 0.20% from its prior close.

On 21 October, the BSE Sensex fell 143.21 points (0.19%) to 73,709.69, while the NSE Nifty 50 closed at 22,811.35, down 77.60 points (0.34%). Selling pressure in power, banking, and financial stocks, alongside elevated crude oil prices, dampened investor sentiment.

Q2 FY27 Earnings Highlights

Several major Indian firms announced their Q2 FY27 financial results. Zomato, parent company of Zomato and Blinkit, reported a 92.3% year-on-year (YoY) increase in consolidated net profit, reaching ₹125 crore, up from ₹65 crore in the same quarter last year.

Tata Group's Indian Hotels saw its net profit climb 19.5% YoY to ₹380 crore for the September quarter, compared to ₹318 crore a year earlier. Adani Energy also posted a 55% YoY rise in net profit, reaching ₹882 crore in Q2 FY27, compared with ₹569 crore in the year-ago period.

Corporate Developments and Contracts

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) secured a ₹770 crore contract from India's Ministry of Defence to supply improved low-level light-weight radar (LLLR-I) systems to the Indian Army. Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC) handed a ₹223.55 crore dividend cheque to the Gujarat government, representing the state's share of its final dividend for FY26.

Tata Communications announced that Spain's National Court ruled in favour of its subsidiary, Tata Communications (Spain) S.L., in a tax dispute with the Spanish Tax Agency. Renewable energy firm Juniper Green incorporated two new wholly owned subsidiaries, Juniper Green Cosmic Fifteen Private Limited and Juniper Green Kite Fifteen Private Limited.

Eternal invested approximately ₹25 crore in its wholly owned subsidiary, Synergistic Financial Networks Private Limited (SFNPL), through a rights issue.

Why it matters

The varied performance across Indian equities on 22 October 2026 suggests a selective investment approach. Strong Q2 results from Zomato, Indian Hotels, and Adani Energy demonstrate resilience in specific sectors despite broader market dips.

Investors will now focus on upcoming Q2 earnings from companies like Swiggy and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation for further sector insights. Defence contracts, such as BEL's ₹770 crore award, indicate continued government spending, potentially creating opportunities for other domestic defence and technology suppliers.
