Retail Sector Maintains Growth Streak

Hong Kong's retail sales value rose 4.6% year-on-year in June, reaching HK$31.5 billion (US$4.02 billion). This marks the fourteenth consecutive month of gains for the sector, according to government data. The increase in June was slower than May's 7.9% year-on-year rise. In volume terms, June retail sales increased 2.3% from a year earlier, a deceleration from May's 4.8% growth. For the first six months of this year, total retail sales value grew 9.6% year-on-year, while volume increased 7.2%.

Visitor Arrivals Fuel Spending

Growth in visitor arrivals significantly supported the retail sector. Hong Kong Tourism Board data shows visitor arrivals increased 6.9% year-on-year in June, totalling 3.72 million. Mainland Chinese visitors comprised a large portion of this, rising 10.5% to 2.88 million. Performance varied across retail categories. Sales of jewellery, watches, clocks, and valuable gifts saw a 20.1% year-on-year jump in June. Conversely, sales of motor vehicles and parts declined 4.3% year-on-year. Clothing, footwear, and allied products experienced a modest 0.5% gain.

Outlook and Business Implications

A government spokesperson noted that continued economic expansion, rising local incomes, and steady visitor numbers will support the sector. However, global economic conditions present a risk to local consumption, which the government plans to monitor. For businesses operating in Hong Kong, this data reveals a continued, albeit moderating, recovery driven by tourism. While visitor spending remains a key prop, the government's caution on global factors suggests companies should watch for shifts in international trade and consumer confidence that could affect Hong Kong's open economy.
