China Grants Autonomous Driving Permits

China has issued new permits for autonomous driving, allowing electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Xpeng and a Volkswagen mainland joint venture to expand their operations. Xpeng announced on social media on Monday, 26 October 2026, that it can now conduct "demonstration operations" with its Yoyo driverless taxis.

These operations will take place in the capital city of southern China's Guangdong province. Crucially, the new licence permits Xpeng's robotaxis to transport paying passengers, marking a significant regulatory step towards full commercial deployment of driverless services.

Intensifying Commercialisation Race

These recent approvals propel the commercialisation of autonomous driving technology within China, particularly for passenger transport. The move intensifies competition between Chinese autonomous driving firms, such as Xpeng and the Volkswagen joint venture, and US-based Tesla, which also seeks a larger footprint in the market.

Industry observers view this licence, which allows for fare-paying passengers, as a critical final assessment for fleet operators. It precedes full regulatory clearance for broader commercial services, showing the government's commitment to developing this advanced technology sector.

Why it matters

The progression of autonomous driving permits in China could accelerate investment in related technologies and infrastructure across Asia. Companies aiming for market leadership in driverless services will likely increase research and development spending, seeking to replicate China's regulatory advancements.

This development also puts pressure on other regional players to secure similar regulatory approvals, potentially leading to a faster rollout of autonomous vehicle services in markets like Singapore and South Korea.

Investors will closely monitor further regulatory announcements from Beijing regarding nationwide commercial licences, which are widely anticipated in the first half of 2027.
