China's Digital Market Dominance

China's online retail sales for physical goods hit ¥13.09 trillion in 2025, establishing it as the world's largest digital market. When including digital products and consumer services, total online transactions across China reached ¥15.97 trillion. This scale significantly surpasses the United States, which recorded a $1.23 trillion digital economy.

However, growth in China's online physical goods sales moderated to 4.3 percent during the first eight months of 2026, following a 5.2 percent rise in 2025.

Southeast Asia and India See Rapid Expansion

Southeast Asia's online transactions reached $191 billion in 2025, expanding by 20 percent, according to e-Conomy SEA data. Indonesia led the Association of Southeast Asian Nations with $71 billion in digital platform sales, followed by Thailand at $33 billion and Vietnam at $25 billion. The Philippines contributed $24 billion, and Malaysia booked $20 billion.

India's e-retail sales also jumped approximately 20 percent in 2025, reaching between $65 billion and $66 billion, supported by an online shopping base of up to 300 million people.

East Asian Markets Show Slower Growth

In contrast to the rapid expansion in developing markets, mature East Asian e-commerce markets recorded slower growth. South Korea's digital checkouts totalled ₩272 trillion (approximately $191 billion) in 2025, but its digital growth rate dropped to 4.9 percent that year, marking the slowest annual increase since national accounting began in 2017.

Japan generated ¥15.2 trillion (roughly $100 billion) in online physical product sales during 2024, representing 9.8 percent of all Japanese merchandise sales.

Strategic Shifts for Future Momentum

As digital penetration approaches saturation in markets like China and South Korea, merchant acquisition costs are rising. Brands are now shifting budgets towards buyer retention and targeted messaging. Regional platform operators are exploring expansion into second-tier cities and automated fulfilment to sustain transaction momentum.

In India, where online transactions comprised only 6 to 6.5 percent of gross retail receipts in 2025, Bain and Flipkart project online retail penetration to reach 10 to 12 percent of consumer spending by 2030, targeting a total market size of $170 billion to $180 billion.
