Zhang Yiming Becomes Asia's Wealthiest

Zhang Yiming, the founder of TikTok parent company ByteDance, has become Asia's richest individual, with his estimated net worth reaching US$105.5 billion. His fortune increased by over US$12 billion this month, according to Bloomberg's analysis of valuations from investment firms including BlackRock, Fidelity Investments, and T. Rowe Price.

This surge placed him approximately US$700 million ahead of Gautam Adani, founder of India's Adani Group, on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Zhang's wealth has grown by more than US$90 billion since his debut on the index in 2019, including a US$40 billion gain so far this year.

Adani Wealth Dips Amid Market Shifts

Gautam Adani, founder of India's Adani Group, has seen his net worth decline in recent months. His fortune, which reached US$120 billion in June 2026, was affected by a rebalancing of stocks in the MSCI index, which weighed on shares across his conglomerate. A broader equity sell-off further compounded these losses, according to the report. Adani Group holds interests in ports, airports, energy, and transmission.

ByteDance's Growth and Diversification

ByteDance, which Zhang founded in 2012 from a Beijing apartment, reported a net profit of US$42 billion on global revenue of US$200 billion for 2025, representing year-on-year increases of 27% and 29% respectively, as stated by Global Times.

The company initially gained recognition with Toutiao before expanding into short-form video with Douyin, later launching internationally as TikTok. ByteDance has since diversified into e-commerce, education, gaming, and news. The company’s legal filings in 2024 showed Zhang owns 21% of ByteDance.

Strategic Focus on Artificial Intelligence

ByteDance is intensifying its investments in artificial intelligence (AI), a sector that is significantly shaping new fortunes. The company offers several AI products, including the Doubao AI chatbot and Seedance, a video-generation tool.

Earlier this month, a consortium of global banks agreed to provide ByteDance with a US$29.6 billion loan for general corporate purposes, including funding its AI research and development, The Wall Street Journal reported. Furthermore, its spun-off AI drugmaking unit, Anew Labs, recently completed a US$290 million fundraising round, valuing the unit at US$1.5 billion.

ByteDance will retain a 56% stake in Anew Labs following this first external funding, Reuters reported. This strategic focus positions ByteDance to expand its market share in the rapidly evolving AI landscape, potentially driving further growth in its valuation.
