Asian Equities Climb on Anthropic IPO, Rate Decisions Loom
Asian equities surged on October 27 as AI bellwether Anthropic filed for its US IPO, while Meta Platforms planned a US$95 billion equity raise ahead of key central bank meetings.

Asian Equities Rally on AI Optimism
Asian equities saw broad gains on October 27, driven by positive sentiment around artificial intelligence (AI) investments. South Korea's KOSPI surged over 3.9% in trading on October 27, marking its steepest one-day jump since early February. Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 1.9%, and MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan increased by 0.9%.
This uplift followed the US initial public offering (IPO) filing by AI bellwether Anthropic, which disclosed substantial losses alongside rapid revenue growth in its submission. Adding to market optimism, Meta Platforms announced plans for an equity fund-raising of up to US$95 billion (S$121 billion).
Central Bank Policy in Focus
Investors are closely monitoring upcoming policy decisions from the US Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank, and the Bank of Japan this week. Market analysts largely anticipate these central banks will maintain current interest rates, with attention focused on policymakers' statements for future guidance.
However, market participants are pricing in a potential rate hike from the US Fed in December. Currency markets remained subdued, though the Japanese yen held strong at 157.72 per dollar ahead of the Bank of Japan's decision scheduled for October 30.
Oil Prices Ease, Bonds Steady
Commodity markets showed caution, with Brent crude futures easing 0.7% to US$114.95 a barrel on October 27. This drift away from a six-month high occurred as investors considered prospects for de-escalation in the US-Israeli conflict with Iran.
Nick Twidale, chief market strategist at ATFX Global, stated that supply concerns remain paramount, suggesting any threat to physical exports could quickly push Brent back towards recent highs or even US$120. Meanwhile, the yield on the US 10-year Treasury note remained steady at 4.992%, staying below the 5% mark it breached in September. Gold prices softened slightly to US$4,013.70 per ounce.
Scrutiny on AI Profitability Signals
The market's focus now shifts to upcoming tech earnings, with over a third of S&P 500 companies, including hyperscalers Alphabet, Microsoft, and Amazon.com, scheduled to report this week.
Anthony Saglimbene, chief market strategist at Ameriprise, highlighted the need for evidence of broadening demand for AI beyond existing interconnected relationships to justify continued infrastructure expansion.
Investors seek assurance that aggressive capital expenditure (capex) spending reflects durable business needs and that profitability will be sustained as new infrastructure becomes operational.
The Bank of Japan's decision on October 30 and these major tech earnings reports will offer immediate signals for Asian investors assessing AI sector valuations and regional capital flows.
