Early Customer Issues Emerge

Apple Inc.'s recently launched iPhone Duo, its first foldable smartphone, is drawing numerous customer complaints regarding its display. Users report the foldable screen cracking, often accompanied by a "crunching sound" along the central crease, just hours or days after activation.

Some customers also observed white patches or other display malfunctions on the right side of the screen. These issues, initially reported on social media platforms like Reddit, have since been independently verified by Bloomberg News with several customers, who provided photographic evidence and records of their support interactions with Apple.

Apple Acknowledges Problem, Offers Support

Apple acknowledged the problem, stating it is "aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units." The Cupertino-based technology giant advised users experiencing display issues to contact AppleCare for a replacement. The company clarified that most Duo units remain unaffected and that any defects typically manifest quickly.

The iPhone Duo, which began sales last Friday, marks Apple's significant entry into the foldable phone market, with devices starting at US$1,999.

Hinge Failure Suspected, Industry Challenges Noted

Repair platform iFixit, known for its product teardowns, suggests the screen cracking stems from a failing hinge component rather than a defect in the display panel itself. This assessment aligns with customer reports of feeling a bump under the display near the crack.

IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo noted these difficulties highlight the steep learning curve for foldables, even for a company with Apple's engineering resources. Jeronimo drew parallels to Samsung Electronics Co.'s initial challenges with its first Galaxy Fold in 2019.

Why it matters

The early production issues for Apple's iPhone Duo could prompt scrutiny across its extensive Asian supply chain, particularly for component manufacturers and assemblers involved in its complex foldable design. Quality control and the robustness of hinge mechanisms will be key areas of focus for partners in countries like China, Vietnam, and South Korea.

This situation also places renewed attention on Asian rivals such as Samsung and OnePlus, which have earlier experience in the foldable market, potentially influencing consumer confidence and competitive strategies in the premium smartphone segment across Asia.
