US Markets See Rebound Amid Oil Price Drop

US stock futures recorded gains on September 11, recovering from earlier declines. Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 299 points, or 0.6%, while both S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 futures also climbed 0.6%. This market shift coincided with a notable retreat in crude oil prices.

Brent crude futures, the global benchmark, fell $4 a barrel to $104.14, after briefly surpassing $108. Despite this daily pullback, crude prices remained approximately 9% higher for the week.

Inflation Concerns and Central Bank Responses

Investors are closely watching upcoming US inflation reports, particularly the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for August, anticipated to show an acceleration in price growth driven by higher gasoline costs. This follows August's Producer Price Index (PPI) data, which exceeded expectations. US diesel prices, for instance, have now surpassed $6 a gallon for the first time.

Amid these pressures, the Federal Reserve's September 15-16 meeting is a key focus, with officials signalling that rate decisions could hinge on recent inflation figures. Separately, the European Central Bank recently increased its key deposit rate by 25 basis points, moving it to 2.5% from 2.25%, in response to persistent price rises.

Individual Stocks Show Varied Performance

Among individual equities, Oracle Corp saw its shares jump 7% in early trading, a rise attributed to positive signs from its data centre project investments. Conversely, Adobe shares declined over 4% in premarket activity, following a fourth-quarter revenue forecast midpoint that fell short of analyst expectations.

In the mergers and acquisitions space, ACV Auctions surged approximately 44% after online vehicle auctioneer Copart agreed to acquire the company in a deal valued at nearly $1.9 billion. Nvidia also posted a modest gain, rising 0.8%.

Why it matters

The global market's sensitivity to inflation and central bank policy in major economies like the US and Europe carries direct implications for Asia. Persistent global energy costs, as reflected in the International Energy Agency's revised forecast for declining consumption, could dampen manufacturing and logistics activity across Asian supply chains.

Investors in Asia will closely monitor the Federal Reserve's upcoming rate decision, as any hawkish shifts could influence regional capital flows and currency valuations. While Asian central banks have largely acted independently, sustained global inflationary pressures may prompt further policy adjustments to manage imported inflation and maintain economic stability.
