Early August Surge

South Korea's exports increased 45.3% year-on-year (YoY) in the first ten days of August. The Korea Customs Service reported outbound shipments reached $21.3 billion. This compares to $14.6 billion in the same August 2025 period. It marks the highest export value ever recorded for this early August timeframe. Global demand for memory chips primarily powered this growth. Imports also rose 23.1% YoY, totalling $19.5 billion. This resulted in a $1.8 billion trade surplus for the period.

Chip Sector Dominance

Semiconductor exports climbed 155.4% to $9.95 billion, the Korea Customs Service revealed. Chips represented 46.8% of total exports. This share increased 20.1 percentage points from a year earlier. Sustained global artificial intelligence (AI) demand drove this segment's strong performance. Petroleum product exports also increased 65.3%, reaching $1.99 billion. Conversely, automobile exports fell sharply by 80.9% to $182 million.

Destination and Cumulative Trade

Exports to China more than doubled, hitting $6.7 billion. Shipments to Vietnam increased 45.4% to $2.39 billion. Exports to the United States saw a marginal decline of 0.2%, totalling $2 billion. Cumulative exports for the year, through Monday, reached $616.3 billion. This represents a 50.3% increase from the prior year. The cumulative trade surplus stands at $169.5 billion for the year.

Why it matters

This strong early August performance highlights South Korea's reliance on chip manufacturing cycles. Continued positive trends in semiconductor demand benefit regional supply chains. Asian chip manufacturers and related industries will closely watch global AI investment flows. Any shift in AI spending could impact South Korea's future export trajectory. Businesses should monitor these export trends for supply chain and procurement planning.
