New Island for Future Industries

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong revealed plans to form a new Western island. This will involve merging several southern islands near Jurong Island. The announcement came at the National Day Rally on Sunday. Singapore aims to support a “new generation of industries” with this project. Advanced manufacturing and new power generation infrastructure are key targets. The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) will also utilise part of the new land.

Strategic Mergers and Precedent

The planned merger includes Semakau, Singapore’s offshore landfill site. Bukom, home to Singapore’s first refinery, also forms part of the cluster. Pulau Sudong, which currently hosts an SAF airstrip, is another component. Several smaller islands will join these. This strategy mirrors the creation of Jurong Island decades ago.

That project combined islands to establish a global energy and chemicals hub. Jurong Island delivered lasting economic benefits.

Infrastructure and Long-Term Vision

The government will build a second road link to Jurong Island due to heavy usage. A new link will also connect Jurong Island to this new Western island. PM Wong stated the new island will diversify beyond petrochemicals. He noted Jurong Island shaped Singapore’s economy for the past five decades. This new Western island can similarly influence Singapore’s development for the next 50 years.

Why it matters

This initiative signals Singapore's long-term commitment to industrial evolution. Businesses in advanced manufacturing and energy sectors can anticipate future land availability. The project reduces reliance on existing industrial clusters. It also creates opportunities for infrastructure development firms. This strategic land expansion reinforces Singapore's position as a regional hub for high-value industries.
