SGX Leadership Transition Planned for 2027

Singapore Exchange (SGX) chief executive Loh Boon Chye is preparing to leave his role by mid-July 2027, marking the end of more than 11 years of leadership. Loh, 62, took charge of SGX in July 2015, following a career in investment banking. He informed the bourse operator's annual general meeting on October 23 that discussions regarding his leadership transition were ongoing.

Under Loh's tenure, SGX strengthened its trading infrastructure and expanded its derivatives and foreign exchange operations. The exchange reported record earnings for its financial year 2026, with adjusted net profit rising 24.6 per cent to S$759.5 million and net revenue increasing 13.9 per cent to S$1.48 billion.

Long-Serving Chiefs at UOB and Singapore Airlines

Loh's upcoming departure brings attention to other long-tenured chief executives within Singapore's Straits Times Index (STI) companies. Wee Ee Cheong, 73, has led UOB for over 19 years, having assumed the CEO position in April 2007.

Under his guidance, UOB significantly expanded its regional presence, notably acquiring Citigroup's consumer banking businesses across Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam in 2022. Similarly, Goh Choon Phong, 64, has served as chief executive of Singapore Airlines (SIA) for nearly 16 years, starting in January 2011.

His tenure saw the launch of budget carrier Scoot in 2012 and the integration of SilkAir into mainline operations. Goh also oversaw SIA's partnership with Tata Sons, leading to the establishment of Vistara and its subsequent merger with Air India in 2024, giving SIA a 25.1 per cent stake.

Keppel and ST Engineering Also Led by Long-Term CEOs

Keppel's chief executive, Loh Chin Hua, 64, has been at the helm for nearly 13 years, taking over in January 2014. His leadership has driven a significant restructuring of the former industrial conglomerate. A key development was Keppel's exit from its offshore and marine business through its merger with Sembcorp Marine in 2023, forming Seatrium.

Keppel has since focused on transforming into an asset manager and operator, concentrating on infrastructure, real estate, and connectivity. Vincent Chong, 57, president and chief executive of ST Engineering, also marked a decade in his role this October, having started on October 1, 2016.

Succession Planning Scrutiny for Singaporean Firms

The planned departure of a long-serving chief like Loh Boon Chye from SGX in mid-July 2027 will test the exchange's established succession processes. This event could prompt investors to assess the leadership transition plans at other major Singaporean firms with long-tenured CEOs.

The continuity of strategic direction and operational stability becomes a key consideration for market participants when such leadership changes occur. Companies with clear, well-communicated succession strategies may gain investor confidence, while others might face increased scrutiny regarding their future leadership pipelines.
