Redemption Price Announced

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has confirmed the premature redemption price for its Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) 2021-22 Series VII. Investors seeking to exit these bonds today, 2 November 2026, will receive ₹14,167 (Rupees Fourteen Thousand One Hundred and Sixty-Seven) per unit.

This redemption option becomes available five years after the bond's issue date, coinciding with an interest payment date. The SGB scheme, launched by the Government of India, allows investors to hold gold in a dematerialised form, offering benefits like interest payments and capital appreciation linked to gold prices.

Price Calculation Methodology

The redemption price is derived from the average closing price of 999 purity gold over the three business days immediately preceding the redemption date. The India Bullion and Jewellers Association Ltd (IBJA) publishes these daily closing prices.

For today's redemption, the RBI used the simple average of gold prices from 28 October, 29 October, and 30 October 2026, to arrive at the final ₹14,167 figure per SGB unit. This calculation method ensures transparency and links the payout directly to prevailing market rates for physical gold.

Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme Overview

The Sovereign Gold Bond scheme permits premature redemptions after the fifth year from the bond's original issue date, provided it aligns with an interest payment schedule. The SGB 2021-22 Series VII was initially issued on 2 November 2021, making today, 2 November 2026, the first eligible date for early exit.

The scheme aims to reduce demand for physical gold, thereby managing gold imports and providing a secure investment alternative for Indian residents. Bonds mature after eight years, but this early redemption window offers liquidity.

Why it matters

For Indian investors holding the 2021-22 Series VII Sovereign Gold Bonds who opted for premature redemption, the RBI's announcement provides a clear payout value. This ensures they receive a return based on the current market price of gold, as per the scheme's terms.

The transparent pricing mechanism, linked to IBJA data, offers predictability for those utilising the early exit option. This mechanism helps manage investment liquidity while maintaining the scheme's core objective of linking returns to gold's performance without the associated storage risks of physical metal.
