SIA Defends Air India Stake, Citing India's Aviation Boom
Singapore Airlines (SIA) defends its 25.1 per cent stake in Air India. The airline cites India's projected aviation market expansion and deeper commercial ties as key drivers for its multi-hub strategy.

SIA's Strategic Rationale
Singapore Airlines (SIA) affirmed its investment in Air India, stating the move aligns with its long-term multi-hub strategy. This enables direct participation in India's growing market, the company's Senior Vice-President for Corporate Planning, Lee Wen Fen, stated. SIA holds a 25.1 per cent stake in the enlarged Air India group.
This followed the consolidation of Vistara, a 2013 joint venture with Tata Sons, into Air India in November 2024. The combined entity operates in both full-service and low-fare segments, accessing valuable airport slots and air traffic rights.
India's Market Potential
SIA highlights India's significant market potential. The country is projected to become the world’s third-largest economy by 2030. It is already the third-largest aviation market by passenger traffic globally. SIA forecasts this market will treble by 2044 from 2024 levels. A rapidly expanding middle class drives this growth.
This demographic, already among the world's largest, is expected to double within 20 years. India also plans to more than double its airports to around 350 by 2047, supporting aircraft orders by local carriers.
Commercial Synergy and Progress
Beyond direct market access, SIA's investment fosters commercial cooperation. Codeshare arrangements now link 61 points across 20 countries and territories. This broadens customer options and connectivity. The collaboration also strengthens Singapore and India's complementary roles as international aviation hubs.
This gives Singapore greater access to India’s vast aviation market. It also connects India more extensively through Changi Airport’s global network. Air India, despite facing challenges like airspace closures and high fuel prices, demonstrates progress. Its Net Promoter Score (NPS) rose over 70 points since November 2022. It also received a Skytrax 4-Star Airline Rating in May 2026.
SIA and Tata acknowledge Air India’s transformation will take time. The SIA board gives the Air India investment full attention. Any requests for additional capital will undergo evaluation under SIA’s disciplined capital allocation framework. This assessment considers Air India’s business strategy and the group’s operating cash flow.
It also accounts for investment requirements for new aircraft and products. This measured approach supports sustainable growth for the SIA Group. It also aims to deliver long-term shareholder returns, Lee Wen Fen stated.
