Partnership for Agentic AI in India

Pine Labs is partnering with Google Cloud to establish agentic artificial intelligence (AI) commerce infrastructure for merchants in India. This collaboration aims to enhance merchant discovery, marketing efforts, operational efficiency, and payment processing.

The initiative will deploy Google Cloud’s Gemini technology, focusing on creating AI agents that can generate and place advertisements across Google Search, YouTube, and Pine Labs' point-of-sale (PoS) devices.

Pine Labs CEO B. Amrish Rau stated that the move addresses the ongoing shift towards AI-driven buying, ensuring India's 60 million small businesses can participate from the outset.

Expanding AI-Driven Tools and Services

Further extending its AI capabilities, Pine Labs' issuing business is developing "Jarvis", a platform built on Gemini Enterprise. Jarvis will support programme creation, diagnostics, and customer assistance for Woohoo, Pine Labs' gift card and voucher platform.

Both companies are also working on methods to make merchant catalogues more accessible for AI agents, allowing for improved product recommendations. This development aims to empower merchants with advanced tools for digital engagement and customer service, as noted by Amit Kumar, Managing Director, Digital Natives Business, Google Cloud India.

Integrated Payments and Governance Frameworks

The new infrastructure will integrate Pine Labs’ P3P payment layer to facilitate transactions within these agentic commerce flows. Initially, this will support India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) before expanding to include other payment rails.

Pine Labs’ Grantex infrastructure will provide the necessary governance and audit capabilities for all transactions processed through the system. Additionally, Pine Labs plans to utilise Gemini Enterprise for catalogue enrichment, advanced search functions, and custom commerce agents, with future support for Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) and Agent-to-Agent (A2A) frameworks.

Why it matters

This strategic alliance is set to significantly impact India's vast merchant ecosystem, particularly its 60 million small businesses. By providing AI-powered tools for advertising, customer support, and payment processing, the initiative can lower operational barriers and expand market reach for these enterprises.

The integration of UPI ensures broad accessibility for digital transactions, potentially driving increased digital adoption among merchants. For investors, this signals a deepening of AI integration within India's fintech and e-commerce sectors, suggesting future growth in platforms that streamline merchant operations and consumer engagement through intelligent automation.
