Philippine Airlines Extends Riyadh Halt

Philippine Airlines (PAL) has prolonged its suspension of flights connecting Manila and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, until November 29. The flag carrier cited an "evolving security situation" at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh as the reason for the extended halt.

PAL announced this decision via a travel advisory on Monday, 12 October 2026, confirming that flights PR654 and PR655 will remain out of service. The airline continues to monitor regional developments to ensure safe operational conditions.

Impact on Filipino Migrant Workers

The continued disruption significantly affects Filipino migrant workers, for whom Saudi Arabia is a critical employment destination. Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) shows that between April and September 2025, 24.1% of all overseas Filipino deployments were to Saudi Arabia, making it the largest recipient country.

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has advised overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Saudi Arabia to avoid crowded areas, particularly at airports, and to verify flight schedules with their respective airlines before travelling.

Security Concerns at Riyadh Airport

The flight suspension follows recent incidents at King Khalid International Airport. The DMW confirmed that four Filipinos sustained injuries during these attacks; three are currently in intensive care units, while the fourth was anticipated to be discharged soon. All injured individuals are receiving medical care at various hospitals in Riyadh.

The DMW, in collaboration with the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) in Riyadh, is actively monitoring their condition and providing necessary assistance.

Why it matters

The prolonged suspension by Philippine Airlines creates ongoing logistical challenges for businesses and individuals engaged in travel between the Philippines and Saudi Arabia. Companies with staff or operations in Riyadh must now secure alternative travel arrangements or adjust schedules for an extended period, impacting business continuity.

This situation prompts firms operating in regions with security concerns to maintain robust contingency plans for staff mobility and essential cargo, with investors watching for any further operational updates from PAL.
