National Wages Council Departure

Veteran corporate leader Peter Seah stepped down as chairman of Singapore's National Wages Council (NWC) on 19 August 2026. Singapore's Ministry of Manpower announced his immediate departure, citing "personal reasons". Mr Seah, 79, had chaired the NWC for 11 years. He continues to serve as chairman for DBS Group, Singapore Airlines (SIA), and Lasalle College of the Arts. He also remains a member of the Council of Presidential Advisers (CPA) and a GIC board director.

Early Banking Career

Mr Seah began his five-decade career in 1968 as a sales executive at British colonial merchant agency Harper Gilfillan. His first financial role was with Citibank in 1969. He eventually became Citibank's country head in Brunei. In 1977, he joined Overseas Union Bank (OUB), a major Singaporean commercial bank.

He was appointed OUB's CEO and vice-chairman in 1991, leading operations until its S$10 billion acquisition by UOB in 2001. He received the Public Service Medal in 1995 and the Public Service Star in 1999 for public service.

Senior Corporate Leadership

Following the UOB-OUB merger, Mr Seah retired from banking in late 2001. He transitioned to senior board and corporate transformation roles. These included positions at Singapore Technologies Group (STPL), ST Engineering, CapitaLand, and Singapore Health Services (SingHealth). He chaired ST Engineering from 2002 to 2013.

During his chairmanship, ST Engineering's revenue grew from S$2.6 billion in 2002 to S$6.4 billion in 2012. He joined DBS Group Holdings and DBS Bank as a non-executive director in November 2009.

Enduring Influence

In 2010, Mr Seah became DBS Group's non-executive chairman, succeeding Koh Boon Hwee. He also retired as Sembcorp Industries chairman after an 11-year tenure. This period saw Sembcorp transform into a focused energy, water, and marine group. Mr Seah received the Distinguished Service Order in 2012 for his economic contributions.

He was appointed chairman of Singapore Airlines (SIA) in January 2017, having joined its board in 2015. He received the Order of Nila Utama (With Distinction) in August 2021, one of Singapore's highest civilian honours.

Why it matters

Mr Seah's NWC departure marks a leadership transition in a key national policy body. His continued chairmanships at DBS and SIA highlight his enduring influence on Singapore's financial and aviation sectors. These roles are critical for investors monitoring stability and strategic direction in two of Asia's most significant companies. Succession planning for such prominent figures remains a continuous focus for corporate governance across the region.
