California Expansion Underway

South Korean beauty giant Olive Young has expanded its physical presence into the United States. The retailer opened its first US store in Pasadena, California, in May 2026. A second location followed in June 2026 at the Westfield Century City mall in Los Angeles. Olive Young plans to open five California stores by the first half of 2027.

This expansion is supported by a new west coast distribution centre in Bloomington, which began operations in March 2026. Future facilities will serve the US east coast and midwest regions.

Interactive Retail Experience

The 803-square-metre Pasadena store mirrors its Korean counterparts, emphasising interactive customer engagement. It offers a cleansing bar for product trials and a Do-It-Yourself station for miniature cosmetic keychains. Customers can also test various beauty devices.

A popular feature is the "Skin Scan" service, which analyses skin conditions via photos and delivers results to phones. These results then inform personalised skincare lessons at the in-store "Beauty Lab" with consultants. The store stocks over 5,000 products from more than 400 brands, organised by ingredient or skin concern.

Strategic Market Entry for K-Beauty

Kwon Ga-eun, head of CJ Olive Young USA, stated that Korean beauty has become a "main current" in the global beauty market. She explained that Olive Young's established retail platform provides a "steadier springboard" for individual K-beauty brands entering the US market.

The company aims to serve as a "global gateway" for Korean brands, building on its 27-year history of discovering and growing promising brands in Korea. This month (August 2026), Sephora will also launch a K-beauty section, curated by Olive Young, demonstrating market integration.

Why it matters

Olive Young's US expansion reveals a direct market entry strategy for Asian consumer brands. It bypasses traditional retail channels by creating dedicated, interactive spaces. This model could offer a blueprint for other Asian brands seeking to establish a direct presence in Western markets.

For Korean beauty brands, Olive Young's platform provides a critical distribution and marketing channel, reducing individual market entry barriers. The company's investment in distribution infrastructure also demonstrates a long-term commitment to global supply chain integration for its product portfolio.
