Nifty's Recent Performance

India's Nifty index closed just below the 23,000 mark on 15 October, having advanced past the key technical resistance level of 22,800. This upward movement also pushed the index's hourly Relative Strength Index (RSI), a momentum indicator, above 70.

This marks the first time the hourly RSI has been in this range since August 2026, indicating stronger short-term buying activity in the market.

Next Resistance and Overbought Signals

Jigar S. Patel, Senior Manager of Equity Technical Research at Anand Rathi Share and Stock Brokers, noted that while breaking 22,800 is a positive technical sign, it does not confirm a complete trend reversal. Patel points to the 23,000–23,150 range as the next significant resistance zone for the Nifty.

He also cautioned that an hourly RSI above 70 suggests the index has entered an overbought area, potentially leading to temporary profit booking or consolidation.

Key Support Levels

The 22,800 level, previously a resistance point, now serves as immediate support for the Nifty. Patel explained that a successful retest of this level, followed by renewed buying, would reinforce the current bullish structure. Conversely, a failure to maintain above 22,800 could signal a weak breakout and increase the likelihood of renewed selling pressure in the market.

Why it matters

For investors, sustaining a decisive move above 23,150, supported by consistent buying momentum, would improve the outlook for further recovery. However, until such a move occurs, the 23,000–23,150 resistance zone warrants careful monitoring for signs of selling pressure, according to Patel.

Traders should remain selective and closely watch price action and hourly RSI behaviour to gauge the Nifty's next directional move.
