Retail Founders Join Top Tier

Lucio and Susan Co now stand as the Philippines' fourth-richest individuals. Forbes estimated their combined net worth at US$3.3 billion this year. This marks their first appearance in the top five of the Philippine rich list. Their primary asset is Puregold Price Club, a national retail chain. The Cos started Puregold in 1998 with a single store in Mandaluyong City.

They identified a retail market opening during the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis. Their plan focused on providing affordable goods and accessible service for Filipinos (Tatler).

Puregold's Market Strategy and Performance

Puregold built its network using a hypermarket concept, offering all products on a single floor. The chain sells value goods to consumers and small businesses. These include sari-sari stores (neighbourhood convenience shops) and independent food and beverage operators. Puregold's network now spans nearly 800 outlets.

These include supermarkets, warehouse clubs, and quick-service pizza restaurants. The company launched the Tindahan ni Aling Puring membership programme. This provides discounts, free delivery, and business financing to small business owners. Puregold went public in 2011. The retailer reported a 24% net profit increase to 3.3 billion pesos (US$54 million) in Q1 2026.

Revenue reached 59 billion pesos in the same quarter. Analysts state Puregold maintains its market position against competitors like Swiss discount chain Dali through weekly promotions.

Diversified Holdings Beyond Retail

The Cos expanded their retail footprint by acquiring S&R Membership Shopping. This introduced the U.S. warehouse club model to the Philippines. S&R caters to upper-middle and premium households, complementing Puregold's mass-market focus. This strategy gives Puregold a broader customer base than its peers (First Metro Securities).

Retail forms only one part of the Cos' business interests. Their business began in 1988 with Cosco Capital, originally an oil industry firm. They have diversified into finance, real estate, and energy. In May, they acquired PrimeWater Infrastructure from property tycoon Manuel Villar. This utility supplies water to 161 cities and towns. They also hold interests in the liquor and wine trade via The Keepers Holdings.

Strategic Growth in Essential Services

The Cos' multi-sector strategy reveals how diversified holdings build wealth in Asia. Puregold's model of serving both consumers and small businesses creates a resilient base. Its expansion into different income segments via S&R secures broader market coverage. This approach demonstrates a blueprint for sustained growth in consumer-driven economies.

The acquisition of PrimeWater further strengthens their infrastructure presence. These moves reveal a pattern of strategic acquisitions and organic growth across essential services in the Philippine market, offering insights for regional investors seeking similar opportunities.
