LG AI Research, NPS Partner for AI-Driven Pension Fund Management
South Korea's National Pension Service will integrate LG AI Research's Exaone Business Intelligence platform to analyse currency movements, aiming to enhance investment decision-making and operational efficiency.
NPS to Use AI for Fund Management
LG AI Research announced on Friday a partnership with South Korea’s National Pension Service (NPS) to develop artificial intelligence (AI) tools for pension fund management. The initial focus will be on creating a service designed to analyse currency movements. The two organisations formalised their collaboration by signing an agreement at LG AI Research’s headquarters in Seoul.
This initiative aims to combine LG AI Research’s AI technology with NPS’s extensive investment expertise, with the goal of improving investment research and decision-making processes. Kang Chang-nam, managing director of investment operations at NPS, stated that AI would enhance the efficiency and specialisation of their investment activities.
Exaone BI to Power Currency Analysis
The first project will deploy Exaone Business Intelligence (Exaone BI), LG AI Research’s financial AI agent. This system is designed to process a wide array of data, including macroeconomic indicators, news reports, research documents, and internal pension fund data.
It will then generate forecasts and analysis specifically tailored for foreign-exchange markets and the fund’s broader investment operations. NPS plans to conduct initial testing with the currency analysis service before progressively expanding the application of AI into other areas of its fund management, seeking to strengthen investment decisions and boost long-term returns.
Proven AI in Financial Sector
LG AI Research highlighted Exaone BI’s existing track record within the financial sector. The platform is currently utilised in services operated by the London Stock Exchange Group, Koscom, and Kiwoom Securities.
It analyses approximately 8,000 companies listed in South Korea and the United States daily, providing predictive scores and commentary intended to mirror the work of human financial analysts.
Lee Hwa-young, head of business development at LG AI Research, noted the institute’s commitment to advancing AI adoption in the public sector, citing prior collaborations with global institutional investors such as the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board.
This collaboration between NPS, one of Asia’s largest institutional investors, and LG AI Research could set a precedent for other major pension funds and sovereign wealth funds across the region.
The successful integration of advanced AI for currency analysis and broader fund management could drive similar adoption trends, particularly among funds with significant international asset exposure. This move may increase competitive pressure for Asian institutional investors to enhance their operational efficiency and seek improved returns through technological innovation.
Demand for specialised financial AI solutions is likely to grow as funds look to strengthen investment decisions and manage complex market dynamics.
