Zóbel Painting Leads Auction Results

Leon Gallery's Magnificent September Auction 2026, which concluded on September 12, recorded strong sales across its offerings of modern fine art and historical items. The top lot was Fernando Zóbel's "Saeta 82 – Filadelfia," which fetched P31.2 million. This price included the gallery's 20.16 percent buyer's premium.

The abstract work holds particular significance as the only piece from Zóbel's "Saeta" series, known for his unique syringe painting technique, that he created in the United States. Painted in September 1958 as a gift to a friend, it had remained in a private collection for over six decades before its auction debut.

National Artist Sculpture Exceeds Expectations

Another notable sale was a water buffalo sculpture by National Artist Abdulmari Imao, which sold for P5.5 million. This figure represented more than 11 times its initial floor price, following competitive bidding. The National Museum had publicly expressed interest in acquiring the piece, potentially contributing to its strong performance.

Intense bidding wars were observed throughout the afternoon, underscoring the robust collector demand for significant works by acclaimed Filipino artists.

Rizal Chess Set Attracts Museum Interest

The auction also saw strong results for historical artifacts, including a hand-painted ivory and bone chess set crafted by Dr. Jose Rizal. Carved around 1893 during his exile in Dapitan, the 32-piece set opened at P4 million and ultimately sold for P6.5 million.

Like the Imao sculpture, the National Museum had indicated its interest in acquiring Rizal's unique chess set, which features both traditional European and African-inspired figures.

Next Online Auction Set for October 17

The successful September auction highlights continued collector interest in high-value Philippine art and historical items. Leon Gallery will follow this event with its 41st Online Auction, known as Leon Exchange, scheduled for October 17.

This upcoming digital sale offers another opportunity for collectors and investors to acquire pieces, reflecting the gallery's strategy to cater to diverse market segments and maintain market momentum.
