KB Financial Group names Lee Jae-keun chairman nominee
Korea's largest financial group, KB Financial Group, has nominated Lee Jae-keun, 60, as its next chairman, an unexpected move over the incumbent that signals a focus on new growth strategies.

KB Financial Opts for New Leadership
KB Financial Group's Chairman Recommendation Committee selected Lee Jae-keun, 60, as its nominee for the next chairman on Friday. This decision bypassed the sitting Chairman Yang Jong-hee, 65, who had been widely expected to secure a second three-year term. Former Woori Bank CEO Kwon Kwang-seok, 63, was also considered.
KB's board stated the choice reflects a need for "bold change and generational transition," aiming to pursue new growth avenues beyond the group's current strong performance.
Lee's Mandate: Global and Domestic Growth
Lee Jae-keun, currently KB Financial Group's chief business officer for global, wealth management, and corporate finance, previously led KB Kookmin Bank for three years from 2022. His immediate focus will include global expansion. While KB Kookmin Bank's overseas subsidiaries turned profitable last year, their earnings lag behind competitors like Shinhan.
Improving KB Bank Indonesia's performance, which continues to incur losses despite recent reductions, is also a key task falling under Lee's direct experience.
Strategic Priorities in Wealth and Corporate Finance
Domestically, Lee will build on KB's established strengths. Wealth management and capital markets are increasingly important growth engines, with KB Securities achieving record earnings in the first half of this year. The group has identified wealth management, pensions, and closer cooperation between banking and securities as strategic priorities.
Lee is also tasked with accelerating a shift towards corporate and productive finance, aligning with policymakers' push for banks to channel more capital into businesses and investment, rather than household lending.
Maintaining Momentum Amidst Change
KB Financial Group has led Korea's major financial groups in annual net profit for three consecutive years through 2025, reaching a record 5.84 trillion won ($4.3 billion) that year. It maintained the top position in the first half of this year with 3.88 trillion won in net profit, compared to Shinhan Financial Group's 3.44 trillion won.
For investors, Lee's appointment signifies a strategic pivot towards new growth areas, particularly in international markets and corporate finance, while navigating the challenge of sustaining KB's market leadership. The group's next earnings report will show how quickly these new strategies take hold.
