Karnataka Bandh Proceeds, Banks Operational

Karnataka faces a statewide *bandh* (strike) today, August 13, 2026, from 6 am to 6 pm. This protest follows a directive from the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA). The CWMA mandated Karnataka release 12,000 cusecs of water daily to Tamil Nadu for 15 days, commencing August 12.

Vatal Nagaraj, convener of the Kannada Chalavali Vatal Paksha, confirmed the protest would proceed. Despite the *bandh* call, banks and other essential services are expected to remain operational. Bengaluru will largely experience normal business activity today.

August Sees Multiple Regional Bank Closures

Beyond Karnataka’s *bandh*, August 2026 includes several bank holidays across India. Manipur’s banks are closed today, August 13, for Patriot Day. All Indian banks will close on Saturday, August 15, for Independence Day, a national holiday. The Parsi New Year (Shahenshahi) is also observed on this date.

Banks in Tripura will observe a holiday on Wednesday, August 19, for Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur’s birth anniversary. These regional closures affect local business operations.

Further Closures Impact Inter-State Business

Bank closures continue later in August. On Tuesday, August 25, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh banks will close for Milad-Un-Nabi (Prophet Muhammed's Birthday) and Uthradam (First Onam). The following day, Wednesday, August 26, banks in numerous states, including Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Delhi, will observe holidays for Barawafat, Milad-un-Nabi, and Thiruvonam.

Friday, August 28, brings more closures across states like Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh for Raksha Bandhan. Standard public dealing hours on working days are 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Why it matters

These varied regional bank holidays create a fragmented operational landscape for businesses in India. Companies with national supply chains or customer bases must plan for intermittent disruptions to financial transactions and cash flow. Managing liquidity across states becomes more complex when banking services are unavailable on different days.

This calendar of closures necessitates proactive scheduling for payments and collections, particularly for firms operating across multiple Indian states during August 2026.
