Nifty, Sensex Fall 3rd Day: Brent Crude Above $100 as Asia Weakens
Indian equity benchmarks, Nifty and Sensex, declined for a third straight session on 9 September 2026. Global market weakness, elevated crude oil prices, and rising bond yields weighed on sentiment, with Asian indices also showing broad declines.

Indian Benchmarks Extend Losses
India's Nifty 50 index fell 0.86% to 23,431 on 9 September 2026, marking a three-month low. The S&P BSE Sensex also declined, shedding 1.08% to close at 74,764. The Gift Nifty, a derivative traded on the NSE International Exchange, stood at 23,461.50. This represented a drop of nearly 90.70 points from Nifty futures' previous close. This movement suggests a negative opening for Indian stock markets on 10 September 2026.
Global Factors and Asia's Response
Global market sentiment remained cautious on 9 September 2026. Brent crude futures gained 0.1% to $101.34 a barrel on Thursday, with US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rising 0.5% to $96.55 a barrel. Middle East tensions drove oil prices above $100, reviving concerns over global inflation and interest rates. Asian markets showed broad declines.
South Korea's KOSPI index fell 1.37% to 6,955.03. Japan's Nikkei 225 dropped 1.07%, and Taiwan's TAIEX index declined 378 points to 46,805.36, falling below the 47,000-point mark.
Analyst Outlook and Support Levels
Hariselvan Radhakrishnan, Founder and CEO of HST Wealth, noted that elevated crude prices and rising bond yields fuel inflation concerns. Sachin Gupta, VP - Technical Research at Choice Equity Broking, observed the Sensex slipping below 75,000. He identified immediate support for the Sensex at 74,500 to 74,600, with resistance at 75,000 to 75,200.
Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities, said Nifty's trend remains weak. He added that holding above 23,500 on Thursday could spark a recovery, but a fall below 23,400 might trigger further correction.
Asian investors face continued pressure from high crude prices and rising bond yields. This environment sustains inflation concerns and impacts interest rate outlooks across the region. Traders should monitor key support levels for Indian benchmarks, particularly Nifty's 23,400 to 23,500 zone.
Further oil price movements, driven by Middle East developments, will influence market sentiment and currency valuations across Asia. The Indian rupee briefly weakened beyond ₹95 per dollar on Wednesday before recovering, aided by suspected Reserve Bank of India intervention, showing ongoing currency volatility.
