HSBC Doubles Hong Kong AI Team, Launches Digital Asset Products
The bank plans to establish a global AI institute in Hong Kong by early 2027, alongside introducing new stablecoin and tokenised deposit services.

HSBC Expands Hong Kong AI Capabilities
HSBC is significantly expanding its artificial intelligence (AI) operations in Hong Kong. The bank intends to double its existing team of 150 AI specialists within the next two to three years. Furthermore, HSBC will establish a global AI institute in the city, with operations expected to commence by early 2027.
This institute will initially focus on AI, post-quantum cryptography, and blockchain technology, aiming to integrate these advancements across HSBC's global operations. Hong Kong has served as HSBC's home market since its founding in 1865 and is now a central hub for the bank's AI investment and delivery.
New Digital Currency, Tokenised Gold Services
The bank is also rolling out new digital asset products for retail clients. HSBC is launching HSBC RedCoin, its first Hong Kong dollar-denominated stablecoin, for 3.3 million customers through its PayMe platform. This stablecoin aims to facilitate peer-to-peer and peer-to-merchant payments.
Later in 2026, HSBC plans to add stablecoin wallet functionality to its HK Mobile Banking app and enable subscriptions to tokenised investment products, including a forthcoming share class of its HKD money market fund. Separately, HSBC Gold Token, launched in 2024, has processed 390,000 trades with a total traded value of US$2.5 billion.
Corporate Digital Bonds, Cross-Border Payments
For corporate clients, HSBC has introduced Tokenised Deposit Services, starting in Hong Kong and expanding across Asia, Europe, the US, and the Middle East. This service supports 24/7 cross-border payments and real-time settlement in various currencies, also applying to corporate treasury management and capital-markets settlement.
The HSBC Orion platform has facilitated over US$8.3 billion in digitally native bond issuance globally. Most recently, Orion supported the Hong Kong Government's fourth digital green bond offering, valued at approximately HK$20 billion, described by HSBC as the world's largest digital bond.
Regulatory Pilots Show Future Direction
HSBC's engagement extends to regulatory innovation, including participation in the Hong Kong Monetary Authority's (HKMA) GenAI Sandbox. Here, the bank tested generative AI for sign-language translation to improve customer accessibility and deepfake detection for anti-fraud capabilities.
HSBC also participates in the HKMA’s Project Ensemble, which aims to facilitate interoperability across digital networks and platforms. These initiatives show how HSBC is working with regulators to develop secure and accessible digital finance infrastructure, potentially setting standards for broader adoption of AI and tokenisation in banking across Asia.
