Hong Leong Bank's HLB Opus Debut

Hong Leong Bank (HLB) introduced its new HLB opus credit card yesterday, 22 September 2026. This invitation-only offering marks Southeast Asia's first ceramic credit card. The product operates on Visa's recently launched Infinite Privilege tier, targeting an exclusive clientele.

Andrew Jong, Managing Director of Personal Financial Services at Hong Leong Bank, confirmed that eligibility for the HLB opus is solely by bank invitation, without a public application process.

Premium Materials and Technology

The HLB opus card distinguishes itself by using zirconia, a durable ceramic material also found in luxury watch manufacturing. This material choice contributes to the card's premium positioning and aesthetic. Giesecke+Devrient (G+D), a global provider of secure payment solutions, supported the card's development. Atul Singh, G+D's Global Head of Distribution, highlighted the advanced material integration.

Strategy for Ultra-Affluent Segment

HLB's strategy with the opus card focuses on the ultra-high-net-worth market segment. The invitation-only model reinforces its exclusivity, catering to individuals seeking bespoke financial products and prestige. This launch reflects a broader trend among Asian financial institutions to differentiate services for affluent clients through unique offerings and advanced design.

Why it matters

The introduction of the HLB opus could spur other regional banks to innovate in the premium card space. This move may intensify competition for high-net-worth clients in Southeast Asia, potentially leading to more exclusive product launches. Banks might explore new materials or bespoke service tiers to attract and retain these valuable customers in the coming year.
