Hong Kong Retains Regional Lead

Hong Kong remained Asia's leading city for billionaires in 2025. Mainland Chinese urban centres rapidly added wealth, fuelled by growth in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector, Altrata reported. Globally, Hong Kong ranked second with 106 billionaires, two fewer than the previous year. New York held the top spot worldwide with 164 billionaires, increasing its count by 12.

Despite Hong Kong's slight dip in headcount, its aggregate billionaire net worth continued to climb, Altrata's 2026 Billionaire Census shows.

China's AI-Driven Wealth Accumulation

Mainland Chinese cities demonstrated significant growth in their ultra-high-net-worth populations. Beijing listed 61 billionaires in 2025. Shenzhen recorded 43 billionaires, tying with Dubai for eighth place globally. Singapore also secured a spot among the top ten cities worldwide.

The United States and China were the only nations with multiple cities ranked within the global top 15. Altrata noted Asian cities are becoming increasingly prominent in the global billionaire landscape.

Global Billionaire Surge

The global billionaire population recorded its strongest expansion since 2020. This trend reflects wealth concentrating faster at the highest levels, driven partly by AI innovation. Paul Sutton, Altrata's vice-president of sales, stated AI is reshaping the billionaire class at an accelerated pace.

This concentration of wealth highlights the rapid capital appreciation within technology sectors, particularly AI, for Asian investors. It also reveals its role in reshaping regional wealth distribution and investment landscapes.

Consequences for Asian Markets

For Asian economies, the surge in AI-driven wealth accumulation in China suggests continued investment in high-tech sectors. This could attract further venture capital and private equity into regional AI startups. The trend also indicates growing domestic consumption power among Asia's wealthiest.

Businesses catering to ultra-high-net-worth individuals may find expanding opportunities in these markets. Continued AI development will likely further influence asset valuations and capital flows across Asia.
