HKEX Postpones Settlement Shift

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX) has delayed its plan to shorten the settlement period for share transactions, pushing the implementation to the second half of 2028. This move postpones the transition from the current T+2 cycle to a T+1 system, meaning trades would settle one day after the transaction.

The exchange had initially aimed to introduce the faster settlement in the fourth quarter of 2027, as outlined in a consultation paper from April this year.

Industry Requests for More Preparation

The decision to delay stems from extensive feedback received from market participants. HKEX stated it had received 109 responses from various industry players, including brokers and investment managers. These respondents highlighted several operational considerations, prompting the exchange to provide additional preparation time for the market to adapt to the new framework.

Continued Support for T+1 System

Despite the revised timeline, HKEX noted that the overall market response showed strong support for the initiative to shorten settlement times. The move to a T+1 system aims to enhance efficiency and reduce counterparty risk within the Hong Kong market. This aligns with global trends towards faster transaction processing in financial markets.

Why it matters

The extended timeline offers Hong Kong's brokerage firms and other financial institutions a longer window to update their systems and processes. This additional period allows for more thorough testing and integration of new technologies required for T+1 settlement.

For investors, the change is expected to reduce settlement risk and free up capital more quickly once implemented in H2 2028.
