Grab's Lending Portfolio Grows

Grab’s gross loan portfolio increased by 197 per cent year-on-year in the second quarter. This pushed its total lending to US$2.3 billion, up from US$781 million in the same period last year. The consolidation of Superbank within GrabFin, Grab’s financial services division, partly drove this expansion.

However, even excluding Superbank’s contribution, Grab’s gross loan portfolio still doubled over the year. This demonstrates financial services are increasingly important for Grab’s earnings.

Sea's Monee Shows Strong Expansion

Sea’s financial services unit, Monee, also demonstrated strong growth in its lending operations. Monee’s loan portfolio expanded by 62.5 per cent in Q2, reaching US$11.1 billion. These figures show financial services are becoming a more important revenue stream for both Grab and Sea.

Digital banks GXS Bank and MariBank, affiliated with Grab and Sea respectively, are contributing to this expanding financial footprint. This reflects a broader trend in Southeast Asia’s digital economy.

Strategic Shift for Tech Giants

This trend reveals a strategic shift for Grab and Sea, diversifying revenue beyond ride-hailing, food delivery, and e-commerce. Growing lending operations can offer higher margin contributions, bolstering overall profitability. For investors, this shows potential for sustained earnings expansion in Southeast Asia’s digital economy.

Companies in the region should watch how these tech giants leverage financial products to deepen customer engagement and market share.
