Financial Literacy for Micro-Entrepreneurs

GCash and Fuse Financing, its lending arm, recently held their "Wais Tindera Caravan" in Cebu. Over 200 nano, micro, small, and medium enterprises (NMSMEs), including sari-sari store owners and vendors, participated. The programme aimed to enhance their understanding of digitalisation and responsible borrowing practices.

This initiative coincided with MSME Month in the Philippines, underscoring GCash's commitment to supporting local businesses.

Addressing Predatory Lending Risks

The caravan delivered financial and business literacy (FinLit x BizLit) modules. These sessions covered essential topics such as budgeting, pricing strategies, inventory management, and sales tracking. A key focus was addressing the risks of predatory lending.

Many micro-retailers still rely on informal lenders, including the "5-6" system, which often carries high interest rates. Such practices can lead to unsustainable debt cycles for small businesses.

Introducing Digital Tools and Responsible Borrowing

Participants learned about digital financial tools designed for NMSMEs. These included GLoan Negosyo, a Fuse cash loan product for urgent funding needs. GCash Pera Outlet Plus (GPO Plus) was also introduced, allowing store owners to earn extra income by offering cash-in, cash-out, and bills payment services.

Kevin Yu, Fuse Financing's Head of B2B lending, stated the programme equips NMSMEs with practical skills for informed financial decisions and sustainable business growth.

Boosting Financial Inclusion and Efficiency

The programme also tackled the digital trust gap among small business owners. Sessions explained secure GCash usage and how digital tools help build a financial track record, granting access to formal financial products. GCash also promoted innovations like SoundPay Plus and EasyPOS for seamless digital QR and card payments.

This effort supports GCash's "Finance for All" mission, aiming for grassroots, community-wide economic growth. For investors, increased digital adoption among MSMEs suggests potential for expanded transaction volumes and loan book growth for GCash and Fuse, reflecting deeper market penetration in the Philippines.
