EBANX Commits to Pakistan Market Entry

Payment processor EBANX plans to commence operations in Pakistan during the first half of 2027. The company intends to integrate its services with local digital wallets, including JazzCash and Easypaisa, as well as Raast, Pakistan’s national instant payment system.

This strategic expansion into the South Asian market follows EBANX's earlier entries into several other Asian economies this year, specifically Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam, alongside its launch in Türkiye.

Pakistan's Mobile-First Payment Landscape

Eduardo de Abreu, EBANX's Chief Product Officer and regional CEO for EBANX Singapore, described Pakistan as a 'mobile-first' market. EBANX observes that smartphone ownership in the country exceeds card ownership by a significant margin of 20 to 40 percentage points.

This market dynamic means that local account-based payment methods, bank transfers, and digital wallets are crucial for companies aiming to gain market share, according to Abreu.

Bridging Local Infrastructure with Global Needs

The fragmented nature of payment systems in such mobile-first markets presents a challenge for international businesses. However, EBANX specialises in connecting local payment infrastructure with the requirements of global merchants.

The company has focused on this integration for over a decade, positioning itself to address the complexities of diverse payment ecosystems in new markets like Pakistan.

Why it matters

EBANX's move into Pakistan highlights a growing trend among payment service providers to target Asia's rapidly digitising economies. For businesses operating or expanding within the region, particularly in markets with high mobile penetration but lower card adoption, understanding and integrating with local account-based payment methods is becoming essential.

Success in markets like Pakistan could offer a blueprint for similar 'mobile-first' Asian economies, influencing future expansion strategies for digital payment firms across the continent.
