Disney, Square Enix Reveal Kingdom Hearts 4 Details; Anime Adaptation Planned

New Game Previewed at Fan Event
Walt Disney and Square Enix showcased their forthcoming "Kingdom Hearts 4" game on Saturday, 15 August 2026. This preview occurred at a Disney fan convention in Anaheim, California. The event marked the high-selling franchise’s approaching 25th anniversary.
The "Kingdom Hearts" series is one of nine video games that have generated over US$1 billion at retail for Disney, Sean Shoptaw, Disney’s executive vice president of games and digital entertainment, stated in a company strategy report on Thursday, 13 August 2026.
Gameplay Details and New Worlds
The game will debut in 2027. A panel at Disney’s D23 entertainment showcase on Saturday displayed a four-minute trailer. This footage featured a new world based on Pixar’s "Coco". This expanded on 90 seconds of content shown on Friday, 14 August 2026. Franchise creator Tetsuya Nomura, a surprise guest, said he aimed to include Disney titles creating strong gameplay synergies.
He cited "Coco" as the best world for achieving that. Panelists also shared details on a new Paper Mickey Mouse world, where Mickey becomes a playable character in a storybook setting.
Franchise Expansion and History
The "Kingdom Hearts" series combines characters and worlds from Square Enix’s "Final Fantasy" franchise and Disney films. The action role-playing series follows Sora, a teenager whose home world is destroyed. "Kingdom Hearts 4" follows Sora trapped in Quadratum, a fictional version of Tokyo’s Shibuya business hub. The first game launched in 2002 for the PlayStation 2.
This began a long-running collaboration between Square Enix and The Walt Disney Company. The franchise will also be adapted into an original anime series for Disney Channel and Disney+, an announcement revealed on Friday. Nomura confirmed his heavy involvement in its development.
