India's Defence Sector Outlook

India's defence and aerospace sector is poised for a new growth phase, driven by technology, local manufacturing, exports, and strategic partnerships, according to DAM Capital. The brokerage anticipates this expansion will extend beyond traditional order volumes.

Following extensive discussions with industry leaders, DAM Capital has identified three public-sector defence undertakings (DPSUs) as its preferred investment choices: Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL), Mishra Dhatu Nigam (MIDHANI), and Bharat Dynamics (BDL). The firm also noted opportunities among private sector companies such as Astra Microwave Products and Zen Technologies.

Bharat Dynamics Leads Upside Potential

Bharat Dynamics (BDL) presents the highest potential upside among DAM Capital's top picks, with a target price of ₹1,560, suggesting a 39% increase. The company's order book stood at approximately ₹261.8 billion at the close of fiscal year 2026, securing four to five years of execution visibility.

BDL's near-term pipeline includes Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missiles (QRSAM), heavyweight torpedoes, and air-to-air missiles. DAM Capital expects BDL's revenue to reach around ₹55 billion in fiscal year 2027, with a longer-term goal of ₹100 billion by fiscal year 2030.

HAL and MIDHANI Prospects

Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) is another key pick, with DAM Capital assigning a target price of ₹5,940, implying a 22% upside. The company's Tejas Mk1A fighter jet programme is nearing its induction phase, with 27 airframes ready and 10 GE F404 engines already received. HAL's growth opportunities also include the HTT-40 trainer aircraft and Dhruv NG helicopters.

Mishra Dhatu Nigam (MIDHANI) received a target price of ₹475, suggesting over 8% potential upside. MIDHANI is positioned to benefit from increasing demand for specialised aerospace materials, including titanium alloys and superalloys, driven by import substitution and potential global orders.

Why it matters

Beyond these specific companies, DAM Capital identifies defence electronics as a significant growth area, projecting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) exceeding 15% over the medium term. Drones are also highlighted as a future driver, with a proposed ₹200 billion Fast Track Procurement programme expected to initiate deliveries within the next 18 to 24 months.

India's broader defence procurement pipeline represents a potential ₹5 trillion order opportunity, encompassing major programmes such as Rafale fighters and P-75(I) submarines. This sustained investment and focus on domestic production suggest continued expansion for Indian defence firms.
