Asia Stocks Expected Up; Nvidia CEO Eases AI Valuation Fears
Futures for Japan, South Korea, and Australia indicated gains, potentially ending a four-day slide for regional markets. MSCI Inc. also initiated a review of Indonesia's emerging market status.

Asian Markets Anticipate Rebound
Asian equities are projected to rise today, 16 October, breaking a four-day losing streak. This positive outlook follows a reduction in investor anxiety regarding the high valuations of artificial intelligence (AI) related stocks. Equity-index futures for Japan, South Korea, and Australia all indicated an upward trend at market open.
This regional sentiment mirrors a volatile trading day on Wall Street, where chipmakers recovered some ground. Nvidia Corp. Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang publicly affirmed the financial stability of AI computing provider CoreWeave Inc., which helped to calm market fears.
Broader Market Dynamics and Bond Shift
The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index initially dropped by as much as 4.4% before paring its losses. Beyond equities, a flight to safety saw investors move into bonds. This drove the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield down to 5.07%. US government debt yields across all maturities fell by 12 to 15 basis points, reaching their lowest levels in several weeks.
Concurrently, the US dollar weakened against other currencies, while gold prices advanced as Treasury yields declined. On Wall Street, an equal-weighted version of the S&P 500 climbed 1.4%, with health-care and consumer-staples shares leading the gains, suggesting a broader market shift.
Indonesia's Market Status Under Review
Further market attention is on Indonesia, as MSCI Inc. has commenced a consultation that could lead to the country losing its coveted emerging market status. The index provider cited ongoing investor concerns about the Southeast Asian nation's stock market. Meanwhile, US economic data released in September showed producer prices and retail sales rising more than anticipated.
This reinforced inflationary pressures that had prompted the Federal Reserve to implement its first interest rate hike since 2023 last month. Market futures briefly indicated a greater than 50% probability of another Fed rate increase in October.
Fed Chair's Bangkok Remarks Watched
Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh is scheduled to speak in Bangkok today, 16 October. He will participate in a fireside chat with International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva. Krishna Guha, an analyst at Evercore, suggested that Warsh is likely to avoid signalling an October rate hike.
This assessment considers the recent global instability in technology stocks and the tightening financing conditions for some AI-focused companies. For Asian markets, any change to Indonesia's MSCI status could trigger capital outflows, impacting its equity market and investor confidence. Investors will also watch Fed commentary for cues on global liquidity.
