China's Sawes Energy Generates Power From 4,000m Altitude Wind
Beijing-based Sawes Energy Technology has successfully generated electricity using its S4000 airborne wind system at 4,000 metres. This advancement could provide power to remote areas across Asia.

High-Altitude Power Generation Achieved
Beijing-based Sawes Energy Technology successfully generated electricity from high-altitude wind, state broadcaster CCTV reported. Its S4000 airborne system reached 4,000 metres (13,123 feet) above sea level. CCTV described this as a world first, noting the prototype completed a full work cycle at a northwestern China test site.
This included ascent, station-keeping, power generation, and recovery. The broadcaster highlighted this as a breakthrough for high-altitude wind power and a step towards engineering deployment.
How the Technology Functions
The S4000 craft, developed with Tsinghua University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Aerospace Information Research Institute, resembles an airship. Roughly the length of a Boeing 747, it is filled with helium and floats skyward, carrying lightweight turbines. At high altitudes, it harnesses stronger, steadier winds.
It then sends generated electricity to the ground via a tether. The system offers significant mobility, allowing quick relocation between sites. This makes it suitable for remote locations such as deserts, highlands, islands, and disaster zones lacking traditional grid access.
Commercial Traction and Previous Models
Sawes Energy, founded in 2023, designates model names based on their operating altitude. The S1500, its first craft to reach a 1 megawatt (MW) power output, flew in September last year. The S2000 followed in January, operating at 2,000 metres. These two earlier models had accumulated nearly 500 million yuan (US$74.3 million) in orders by March, according to the company.
This commercial traction demonstrates early market interest in the technology’s potential for scalable energy solutions.
This technology presents a novel approach for remote power supply across Asia. Many Asian regions, particularly in Southeast Asia and parts of China, face challenges extending traditional grids. Sawes Energy’s system could lower infrastructure costs for off-grid communities and industrial operations.
Investors will watch for further commercial deployments and scaling of power output. Success could drive new investment into airborne wind energy start-ups across the region, impacting energy access and development.
