ANTA Sports completes $1.8bn PUMA stake buy from Artémis
The Chinese sportswear giant now holds 29.06% of PUMA, becoming its largest shareholder and advancing its global expansion strategy.

ANTA Secures Significant PUMA Stake
ANTA Sports Products Limited has finalised its acquisition of a 29.06% stake in German sportswear firm PUMA SE. The transaction saw ANTA pay Artémis SAS, the investment vehicle of the Pinault family, $1.8 billion (€1.5 billion) in cash. This completion follows all necessary regulatory approvals and the fulfillment of closing conditions. As a result, ANTA Sports now stands as PUMA’s largest single shareholder.
Driving ANTA's Global Multi-Brand Strategy
This strategic investment directly advances ANTA Sports' stated “single-focus, multi-brand, globalisation” strategy, aiming to expand its influence beyond its core Chinese market. The Chinese group intends to leverage its extensive expertise in brand management, retail operations, and global resource integration to support PUMA's continued growth.
ANTA Sports Chairman Ding Shizhong affirmed the group's confidence in PUMA’s management team and its ongoing strategic transformation efforts, stating a commitment to long-term value creation.
Partnership Focus and Governance
Ding Shizhong emphasised ANTA's commitment as a long-term shareholder, aiming to share its capabilities, particularly in retail and operations, while respecting PUMA’s independent brand identity and governance.
PUMA CEO Arthur Hoeld welcomed ANTA as its new largest shareholder, foreseeing a partnership that creates sustainable value for the company and its shareholders as PUMA strives to become a top three global sports brand. ANTA plans to seek representation on PUMA’s Supervisory Board but has no immediate plans for a full takeover.
Asian Influence in Global Sportswear
The acquisition underscores the increasing ambition of Asian sportswear companies on the global stage. ANTA Sports' deep market knowledge and operational efficiencies, refined within Asia's dynamic consumer landscape, can significantly bolster PUMA's reach, particularly in high-growth Asian markets.
This move is expected to intensify competition among global and regional players, potentially reshaping market shares for brands like Li-Ning and Xtep across Southeast Asia and China.
