Aditya Birla UltraVolt Entry Dents Indian Cable Stocks
Aditya Birla Group's new UltraVolt unit, backed by a ₹1,800 crore investment, entered India's wires and cables market. This triggered declines for listed competitors like KEI Industries and Polycab India on the BSE.

New Entrant Pressures Incumbents
Aditya Birla Group (ABG) launched UltraVolt, its new wires and cables business, on 4 September. This entry, backed by a ₹1,800 crore capital commitment, immediately impacted incumbent Indian cable manufacturers. Shares of KEI Industries fell over 8% on the BSE. Polycab India shares dropped 6%. Finolex Cables and R R Kabel each saw a 5% decline.
Havells India also closed over 3% lower during the session. The market reacted to concerns over increased sector competition, anticipating potential erosion of existing players' market reach.
UltraVolt's Ambitious Market Goals
UltraVolt aims to become one of India’s top two wire-and-cable players within five years, according to Kumar Mangalam Birla, ABG Chairman. The new entity will launch as India's second-largest player by capacity in the wires segment. UltraVolt will operate under UltraTech Cement, another ABG subsidiary. UltraTech Cement shares, conversely, rose nearly 2% during the session.
This move follows ABG’s recent expansions into other sectors, including paints with Birla Opus, jewellery retail via Indriya, and B2B e-commerce through Birla Pivot.
ABG's aggressive entry demonstrates a strategic shift for India's industrial conglomerates. New, well-capitalised entrants can quickly reshape market dynamics, even in established sectors. Existing players in India's wires and cables segment face increased pressure on market share and margins.
Investors will monitor UltraVolt’s execution against its stated capacity and market position targets. The sector may see consolidation or intensified price competition as new capacity comes online. This development highlights the ongoing transformation within India’s manufacturing landscape, as large diversified groups seek new growth avenues.
