Vietnam Gold Prices Rise Modestly, Global Markets Await Fed Data

Vietnam's domestic gold prices advanced slightly on Friday, contrasting with flat global rates. Saigon Jewelry Company (SJC) bar prices climbed, yet remain down year-to-date and maintain a significant premium over international benchmarks. Global markets held steady, awaiting U.S. payrolls data for Federal Reserve interest rate clues.

Vietnam's Local Gold Premiums Persist

Vietnam's domestic gold market saw modest gains on Friday. Saigon Jewelry Company (SJC) reported its gold bar price increased 0.13%, reaching VND148.6 million (US$5,697.31) per tael. Gold ring prices also gained 0.14% to VND148.1 million per tael. Despite Friday's rise, SJC's gold bar price sits 0.07% lower than the week's opening.

Local gold prices have slid 2.75% since the start of this year. Vietnamese gold continues to trade at a substantial premium, approximately VND6.8 million per tael above global rates. (A tael equals 37.5 grams or 1.2 ounces.)

Global Gold Holds Steady Ahead of US Data

Globally, gold prices remained stable on Friday, following a 2% jump on Thursday. Spot gold held its position at $4,468.27 per ounce. U.S. gold futures for December delivery, however, fell 0.6% to $4,514.60. Market attention focused on upcoming U.S. payrolls data. This data could offer clues regarding the Federal Reserve's next interest rate decision.

Analysts generally consider gold an inflation hedge, but higher interest rates typically weigh on non-yielding assets like gold.

Analyst Sees Rate Hike Impact on Gold

Ross Maxwell, global strategy operations lead at VT Markets, commented on the market's sensitivity. He stated that weak U.S. payroll figures and a rise in unemployment could reduce the case for a Federal Reserve rate hike. Such a scenario might allow gold prices to recover.

Maxwell also noted that the metal could remain subject to shifting sentiment, particularly with inflation data releases scheduled for next week. Central bank demand for gold continues to provide underlying support, potentially limiting any significant price declines.

Why it matters

The persistent premium in Vietnam's gold market means local buyers pay significantly more than international benchmarks. Any shifts in global gold prices, driven by U.S. economic data and Federal Reserve policy, will directly affect this local premium. Vietnamese investors should watch the U.S. payrolls data closely, as it will influence global gold prices.

A weaker dollar or lower interest rate expectations could narrow the local premium, while a stronger dollar or higher rates might widen it. Central bank buying provides a floor, but local supply-demand dynamics also shape Vietnam's unique pricing.
