UOB, AWS Partner for ASEAN Hybrid Cloud Banking, AI Skills
The collaboration will establish a dedicated Singapore cloud environment, enhancing UOB's operational resilience and regulatory compliance across five Southeast Asian markets.

UOB, AWS Partner for ASEAN Hybrid Cloud
Singapore's UOB has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to develop a hybrid cloud infrastructure model for its banking operations across Southeast Asia.
This collaboration aims to establish a dedicated cloud environment in Singapore, enhancing UOB's operational resilience and ensuring compliance with regulatory and data residency requirements across its five ASEAN markets.
Both companies stated this marks the first time AWS has partnered with a bank to combine hybrid cloud capabilities with security and governance controls specifically tailored for the banking industry's regulations in the region. Initial focus areas include hybrid cloud architecture, data analytics, and AI-powered customer engagement strategies.
Tailored Cloud for Regional Compliance
Under the proposed model, UOB would manage its systems and data across both on-premises infrastructure and cloud environments. This setup includes an isolated cloud extension, which can be deployed in specific countries to meet local regulatory demands.
The dedicated Singapore-based cloud environment will address UOB's security, governance, and data residency needs for its five ASEAN markets. It will also provide access to essential cloud tools for artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics, supporting the bank's regional technology needs and infrastructure modernisation.
Lawrence Goh, UOB's Head of Group Technology and Operations, noted that realising this vision requires a secure and resilient technology foundation, strong governance, and the right partner ecosystem.
AI Innovation and Workforce Upskilling
UOB and AWS will explore using AI to enhance customer experiences and internal operations, with potential applications like conversational banking and personalised services. UOB plans to build on its Enterprise GenAI Platform by using Amazon Bedrock, AWS's managed service for generative AI (GenAI) applications.
This could support the development of AI-powered solutions across the bank, from employee productivity tools to enterprise applications. To further its digital transformation, UOB will also utilise AWS's structured learning programmes.
These aim to equip employees with skills in cloud technologies, GenAI, data analytics, security, and compliance, building on the bank's existing AI upskilling initiative. Jaime Vallés, AWS Vice President for APAC, stated that UOB will gain innovation tools and training for AI fluency and cloud skills, while keeping customer data secure.
This collaboration establishes a model for financial institutions in Southeast Asia seeking to balance advanced technology adoption with strict regulatory mandates. Other regional banks may now increase their investment in hybrid cloud architectures and AI training programmes to ensure competitive service delivery and data governance.
This could lead to greater demand for specialised cloud services and skilled talent across the ASEAN banking sector, potentially driving new partnerships between financial institutions and cloud providers to meet evolving market and compliance needs.
