Philippines Ships Coconuts to Liberia

The Philippines Department of Agriculture (DA) recently sent 50 metric tons of young coconuts to Liberia. This initial delivery, a collaboration between the DA and Davao City-based Avante Agri-Products Philippines Inc., marks an effort to establish new export markets in West Africa.

The shipment, valued at $22,400 free-on-board (FOB), was transported in two 40-foot refrigerated containers to Monrovia. Liberia's Ministry of Agriculture facilitated the arrival, with the coconuts intended for donation to rural communities to support feeding programmes and provide household benefits. CMA CGM's Smart Reefer Container technology was used to maintain produce freshness during transit.

Agriculture Department Targets West African Market

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. stated that this shipment could unlock broader opportunities for Philippine coconut products in Liberia and neighbouring countries. The DA aims to expand market access, viewing private-sector partnerships as crucial for boosting agricultural competitiveness and improving farmers' livelihoods.

The department's focus is on transforming these initial deliveries into sustained demand for the Philippine coconut industry, ensuring long-term benefits for the sector.

Avante Agri-Products and Logistics Support

Avante Agri-Products Philippines Inc., a firm based in Davao City, served as the private sector partner for this export initiative, supplying whole green young coconuts. The logistical aspects were supported by shipping giant CMA CGM, which deployed its advanced Smart Reefer Container technology.

This ensured the perishable produce remained fresh throughout its journey to Monrovia, Liberia, highlighting the critical role of specialised logistics in long-distance agricultural trade.

Boosting Coconut Farmer Returns

Expanding into new international markets, particularly in West Africa, offers direct economic benefits for Philippine coconut farmers and exporters. Successful long-term demand from these regions would translate into improved financial returns for farmers, strengthening the overall Philippine coconut industry.

The DA's strategy focuses on securing consistent orders beyond initial shipments, which is vital for sustainable growth and enhancing the sector's global footprint.
