Orion Consortium Targets Southeast Asia with US$20 Billion Critical Minerals Investment
A US-led consortium, backed by the US International Development Finance Corp and ADQ, plans over US$20 billion for critical mineral projects, prioritising Southeast Asia.

Major Investment Focuses on Southeast Asia
The Orion Critical Mineral Consortium plans to invest over US$20 billion in mining projects. This US-led group prioritises Southeast Asia for these ventures. US private equity firm Orion Resource Partners, based in New York, leads the consortium. Key financial backing comes from the US International Development Finance Corp and Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund ADQ. The consortium targets minerals essential for global energy transition technologies.
Securing Key Resources for Energy Transition
The investment aims to secure critical minerals such as nickel and copper. These metals are vital components for electric vehicles (EVs), advanced batteries, and renewable energy systems. Oskar Lewnowski, Orion’s founder and group CEO, stated the consortium held “constructive” discussions with several government institutions. These include Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund Danantara, which is a key potential partner in the region.
Implications for Regional Development and Supply Chains
Orion Resource Partners is also in direct talks with Indonesia’s Danantara to fund specific mining projects within the country. This regional focus drives significant foreign direct investment (FDI) into Southeast Asia's mineral extraction sector. Such capital flows can accelerate the development of local supply chains for EV and battery manufacturing. The investment strengthens the region's position in the global shift towards green technologies and clean energy.
