High-Profile Investment

Jeff Bezos and Singapore-based Eduardo Saverin are part of a consortium nearing a deal for a Liverpool FC stake. The group, led by Amit Bhatia, seeks to acquire about one-third of the Premier League club. Bhatia is Lakshmi Mittal's son-in-law. Sky News reported the club's owner, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), could announce this deal this week. FSG had confirmed interest in a strategic minority investment last month.

Significant Valuation

The proposed investment values Liverpool Football Club at approximately GBP4.4 billion (US$5.9 billion). This would rank among the highest valuations for a football club transaction. FSG acquired Liverpool in 2010 and has explored external investment options while retaining overall control.

A deal at this valuation would underscore the substantial increase in Liverpool's worth during FSG's 16-year ownership. The club won its 20th English league title in the 2024–25 season.

Club Changes Amid Deal

This investment comes amid significant changes at Anfield, Liverpool's home ground. The club finished fifth in the Premier League last season, despite spending about GBP446 million on new players. Liverpool subsequently replaced manager Arne Slot with Andoni Iraola. Key forward Mohamed Salah also departed, as did Michael Edwards, former chief executive of football at FSG, in July.

Asian Capital Flows

This high-profile investment highlights the significant capital flowing into global sports assets, attracting prominent figures like Singapore-based Eduardo Saverin. Asian investors continue to seek opportunities in established international brands, demonstrating a diversified investment appetite. The valuation also sets a benchmark for future transactions in top-tier football. For Asian businesses, such deals reflect the global appeal and financial muscle of premier sports franchises.
